Solar Power projects have been exempted from statutory environmental clearance as per a new announcement by the Ministry of Environment, provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, 2006 will not be applicable to solar parks and solar PV projects. The disposal of PV cells will however be covered under the provisions of Hazardous and Other Waste (Management and Trans-Boundary Movement) Rules, 2016.
The ministry said that the development of solar parks will be covered under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. However, no solar project should be implemented in agricultural land and areas with a large habitation. It further said that a proper resettlement and rehabilitation plan should be in place in case a project involves displacement of habitation.
